Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Hawaii

This was my favorite beach from the trip to Hawaii. It's a black sand beach named Punalu'u. The water was an incredible blue and the contrast with the black sand beach and lava rock beautiful. Prints are available on my website along with more shots from Hawaii.

Onomea Bay Sunset - Hilo Hawaii

On my way into Hilo I passed a sign for a Scenic Drive and took note. After I checked into the hotel I went back to check it out. The scenic drive is a 4 mile drive along the Hāmākua Coast. It's a beautiful drive that twists through a lush tropical rain forest lined with streams. There are several stops to allow for breathtaking views of the coast. The Hawai'i Tropical Botanical Garden can be found about halfway through the drive. The road, it is a bit narrow and there are several one-lane bridges but besides that it's a must see drive.

Aloha Theater Big Island Hawaii

On advice from my guidebook I decided to check out the Aloha Theater Cafe. I had been here before a few years ago and enjoyed eating on balcony that sits on the southern side of the theater. There were plenty of Geckos to great us during our meal. Unfortunately this balcony is closed and they're building a new balcony in the back. The food was still good and service was great. Check it out if you get a chance. I haven't gone to a show at the theater yet but maybe on the next trip.

La'aloa Beach Park

Another great day in Hawaii. This time I got some shots of the sunrise along the coast at La'aloa Beach Park. The weather was perfect. I've been having quite a few days with a lot of haze so it nice to get some sunshine in a few of the photos. This is a nice small beach with a lifeguard but there's also a lot of rocks and the waves pack a punch. Prints can be purchased here Images By Josh.

Hapuna Beach State Park - Big Island Hawaii

This is a beautiful beach located on the Kohala area of the Big Island, Hawaii. There's a long 150ft to 200ft of wide and mile long beach with picnic facilities and bathrooms. It's an excellent place for families to spend the day. We spent most of our time boogie boarding and taking in the view. Prints can be purchased at Images By Josh.

There were all kinds of Geckos (not to be confused with Geico) around our condo in Hawaii. This guy hung around for quite awhile as we took in the view. They weren't shy and we found several inside the house and garage also.

Kona, Hawaii Sunset

Nothing like the sun setting over the ocean. This is the view from the house we stayed at in Kona, Hawaii. A lot of the nights/days had quite a bit of haze and it made it difficult to get good shots. This night the haze gave me a bit of a break. The next night was full of rain and clouds. I'll have more photos up as I edit them. Punalu'u Bake Shop

Just stopped in this bakery which is about an 1 1/2hrs south of Kona. Their claim to fame is that they're "The Southernmost Bakery in the USA". I'm not sure if that's true but the Malasadas sure are good. Here's a link to their website Punalu'u Bake Shop.

Central Park and Lake Elizabeth began development in 1960. The Lake was dedicated to Fremont's Sister City, Elizabeth, Australia, on March 22, 1969. The Park is set on 450 acres with an 83-acre lake.

Intercontinental San Francisco

We had the chance to take a quick getaway to San Francisco. We stayed at the Intercontinental San Francisco. It's a great hotel with a contemporary design. It's located in the SOMA district, close to shopping and SF sights. AT&T park is only a few miles away as well as Pier 1 on the Embarcadero. The view from our room was beautiful with views of the SF bay. The view from the other side of the building included the Marriott and Bloomingdales.

Point Lobos State Reserve

I wanted to get out of the house and check out the cool California coast because the weather has been so hot. I drove along Highway 1 towards Carmel. I stopped at Point Lobos State Reserve. I did a little hiking but spent most of the time checking out the tide pools. One spot in particular caught my attention. I took several shots and hung out and enjoyed the waves coming in. For the most part the scene was just like this:

The waves were very calm and you could see the water ripple in the tide pools as the wind blew. After awhile I wasn't really paying attention to how high the waves were getting. I was taking a few shots of the coast line and turned to take some photos of the other direction and I almost got taken in by a huge wave. I was able to keep my balance but I got soaked. Here's what I saw coming right at me:

L'Auberge Carmel

I was enjoying the great weather in Carmel, CA a few weeks ago and came across this hotel. It's called L'Auberge Carmel. Looks pretty fancy so I took a shot with the cell phone. I took a look at their website it's a Luxury hotel with very nice accommodations. They offer cooking classes at the hotel's restaurant also (Aubergine Restaurant). The rooms start at around $250.00, a little out of my price range so I guess I'll have to enjoy from afar.

Silicon Valley Brain Tumor Ride

My wife participated in the Silicon Valley Brain Tumor Ride held at Guadalupe River Park in San Jose, CA. The ride was organized by the National Brain Tumor Society. We were glad to be apart of the fight against cancer. Here's a shot of some of the riders completing a 10 mile ride.

Quarry Lakes Fremont, CA

Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation area is located in Fremont, CA. The park is beautiful and there's a lot to do. Guests can swim in the small beach area, picnic, play volleyball, and fish. I decided to do a little hiking and took a few shots while I was there. Here's one of my favorites.

We were able to get a few days off to head down the coast and enjoy the great weather in Monterey and Carmel. We love spending time people watching, window shopping, and finding great restaurants all around town. We're so glad we're only an hour and a half away from paradise. We stayed at the Mariposa Inn & Suites in downtown Monterey.

Yosemite National Park is located in the central Sierra Nevada of California. It takes approximately 4 hours to drive to the park from San Francisco. The park covers an area of 761,268 acres and over 3 million people visit Yosemite each year.

Most of my travels to Yosemite center around Yosemite Valley. It only represents one percent of the park area, but this is where most visitors arrive and stay. I love photographing families and especially the little ones. I took a drive up to Santa Rosa Junior College and did a shoot at Shone Farms. It's a beautiful farm with various crops. Portland Japanese Garden

The Portland Japanese Garden is located in Washington Park. I had to a chance to spend an hour or two there. It was as beautiful in person as I've seen in photos. The perfectly manicured landscape was very peaceful and had several places to sit and take it all in. I wished I had visited during the Fall so I could see all the colors but even in the spring the garden was still a sight to see. The Garden was a lot bigger than I had imagined and is located on top of a hill ( I took the shuttle to the top).

Horsetail Falls

Horsetail Falls is also located on the Historic Columbia River Highway, in the Columbia River Gorge. The waterfall is a bit smaller than Wahkeena Falls at 172 feet. I'm told water falls over the falls throughout the entire year. There's a short 1/2 mile trail that will take you to the top of the falls.

Wahkeena Falls

While in Portland I decided to check out the Historic Columbia River Highway. We stopped at Wahkeena Falls. It is located in the Columbia River Gorge. The waterfall comes down about a 242 foot drop. The waterfall cascades down the hill in a very peaceful manner.

Portland Rose Garden

I had a chance to visit Portland and take some photos. There are several beautiful parks and I was able to visit a few of them. One of my favorites was called Washington Park. This park is huge and is similar to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The park has a zoo, Japanese Garden, and various other points of interest. I stopped at the International Rose Test Garden to take a few photos but unfortunately the roses weren't in season yet. The Garden was still very pretty. The International Rose Test Garden has been around since the early 1900's. It was nice to leave Fremont, CA for a few days. How Do You Eat an Ice Cream Cone?

Some folks taste it daintily,
Others gulp it down quick-ily.
Some lick around and around,
So it never, ever comes dripping down.
Some shove the ice cream
Down with their tongue,
So at the bottom of the cone,
You're left with some.
But some lick in just one place
So it gets sort of sloppy,
And the top plops off
In a great big bloppy!

Monterey & Pacific Grove

We took a drive down to Monterey for my wife's birthday. Monterey Peninsula has been called the greatest meeting of land, sea and sky. Monterey is a beautiful community alongside the California coast it's located 115 miles south of San Francisco and 350 miles north of Los Angeles. Monterey's has many wonderful sites to see including historic Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, the Monetery Bay Aquarium, with great beaches. More photos of this beautiful place at Images By Josh

Took a couple of shots of my nephew the other day. I like this one because he's got his arms up and it looks like he's getting robbed. Or maybe he just scored a goal in soccer. Scoooooooore! Or maybe he's just yelling...Victory!

Pigeon Point Lighthouse

I took a little drive along the coast a few weeks ago and stopped at the lighthouse to take in the view. This lighthouse is located on the central California coast, 50 miles south of San Francisco. It stands about 115-feet tall. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is one of the tallest lighthouses in America, and has been around since 1872. You can find a few more shots at ImagesByJosh.com.
